Coldplay drummer Will Champion has lifted the lid on a failed collaboration attempt with the late David Bowie.

Speaking candidly with British magazine NME, Champion said that Coldplay had been developing a song with a “David Bowie-type character”, and wrote a letter to Bowie to see if he would be interested.

Bowie replied to the invitation, saying simply “it’s not a very good song, is it?”.

Champion recalled the moment with a chuckle, adding “he was very discerning, he wouldn’t just put his name to anything, so, I’ll give him credit for that.”

Guitarist Jonny Buckland also reflected on Bowie’s passing during the short video, saying that “I felt incredibly said when I heard David Bowie had died”.

“We’ve all loved his music for, well, as well as long as we have known about music”.

David Bowie’s final album, ‘Blackstar’, has debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
