Girls accused of starting house fire that killed two dogs

Two girls are accused of starting a fire in a Sunshine Coast home this morning that killed two dogs and injured and a mother and her son.

Firefighters were called to the home at Coes Creek just before 8am today.

It’s understood the fire was started in bedding, and spread throughout the two-storey house.

A mother and son were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and minor burns to their hands.

“The family is absolutely broken, they’ve got two dogs, a seven-year-old and a 12-month-old, and unfortunately they died in the incident,” Rob Coffey from Queensland Police said.

The home was quickly declared a crime scene and police began searching for two missing juveniles who were later found at Nambour train station and arrested.

They have been charged with arson, two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, and serious animal cruelty.
