Coalition vulnerable on schools, health

A veteran Liberal strategist says Scott Morrison will need to neutralise Labor's messages about school and hospital funding cuts if he is to win the election.

The prime minister has hit the campaign trail after calling a May 18 poll.

Labor is campaigning heavily on health and education, arguing the coalition is yet to properly restore funding cut in a series of federal budgets.

Liberal strategist Grahame Morris said the most dangerous weapon in Labor's arsenal is "Tanya Plibersek's lips" - referring to the deputy Labor leader.

"The government should be now inoculated against Tanya's fibs about education and health cuts," Mr Morris told Sky News on Thursday.

"The government has spent record amounts."

Experienced Labor strategist Bruce Hawker said Labor had to be most wary of the coalition's attack on its negative gearing and franking credits policies.

"Any time you are dealing with the economy and some of the levers around the economy you are susceptible to fear campaigns," he said.

"Introducing tax reform measures from opposition is a challenge, but there is so much upside in that for Labor with the extra revenue that allows them to do a lot of things the government can't do because it won't have as much money to spend."
