The coalition is still trailing Labor on a two-party preferred poll but Malcolm Turnbull has stretched his leader as the country's preferred leader.

The latest Newspoll published in The Australian reveals the prime minister now leads Labor's Bill Shorten as preferred leader 45 to 31.

The coalition also received its best two-party preferred result since April last year, trailing Labor 48 to 52.
