Coalition slightly up on Labor: Newspoll

The coalition has edged ahead of Labor on a two-party preferred basis, 51 per cent to 49, in the latest Newspoll after being neck and neck two weeks ago.

However, both Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese have lost ground with voters, registering negative performance ratings.

Mr Morrison's satisfaction rating was at 43 per cent with 52 per cent dissatisfied with his performance. Mr Albanese's approval rating dropped to 38 per cent with 45 per cent dissatisfied.

The coalition's primary vote stood at 41 per cent to 33 for Labor.

Meanwhile, Newspoll has switched to using an online survey for greater accuracy. YouGov Asia-Pacific, which produces the polls for The Australian, has reviewed its methodology after wrongly calling the May 18 election result, giving up robocalls and calls to landlines.

"Conducting surveys online will allow us to construct better samples, in terms of age, gender, and socio-economic representation. The more complex scripting we can do online will also allow us to tailor our questionnaires more precisely to reflect the choices voters actually face at the ballot box," said Campbell White, the head of public affairs and polling.

The latest poll interviewed 1519 voters.
