The federal coalition's $15 million pledge towards a Melbourne-based sports research hub is not a handout to the Collingwood Football Club, its president Eddie McGuire insists.

The AFL club and Monash University have teamed up to create the sports and medical research hub, which will focus on injuries in female sports.

The $70 million Victoria Sport project will be based in the Melbourne and Olympic Parks precinct and include additions to Collingwood's headquarters.

McGuire said Collingwood is driving the project, which will benefit the wider sporting community.

"It's not just about Collingwood," he told reporters on Friday.

"It's not just a handout to the Collingwood Football Club."

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the $15 million in federal funding was already allocated in the budget's community grants program.

McGuire said the rest of the funding would be sought from potential partners.

Victoria Sport will focus on injury prevention, treatment and recovery for people of all levels of sporting ability across multiple sports.
