Clive Palmer tells Murdoch to back off Peta Credlin

Clive Palmer has leapt to the defence of Peta Credlin, urging Rupert Murdoch to stop "personally" attacking Prime Minister Tony Abbott's chief of staff.

Earlier this week the media mogul called for Mr Abbot to sack Ms Credlin in the wake of his highly-criticised decision to award a knighthood to Prince Philip on Australia Day.

However, Mr Abbott later revealed that he had not consulted cabinet or his chief of staff about the controversial decision.

Mr Palmer, who has previously attacked Ms Credlin over her role in formulating the Coalition's Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme, said he didn't think the chief of staff should be attacked personally.

The Palmer United Party leader said Murdoch's papers had attacked him after he made a "faux pas" about Ms Credlin's while criticising the PPL.

At the time Mr Palmer defended his comments by saying that Ms Credlin's should not be immune from scrutiny because of her senior role in government.

The lower house MP said News Corp papers had not been critical of Murdoch's criticism of Ms Credlin.

"They're very inconsistent," he said.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has also defended Ms Credlin saying that the PM should own his mistakes.
