Fact stranger than fiction as Palmer staffer charged with abduction scheme

Clive Palmer is one of the innocent victims of an elaborate plot allegedly involving his senior media adviser.

Prosecutors will claim Andrew Crook, a Gold Coast private investigator and a former AFL footballer were part of a scheme to kidnap a bank employee.

The case is stranger than fiction and the allegations read like a Hollywood script.

Detective Phil Stevens said it was "the most elaborate plot" he'd seen in 35 years of policing.

Mr Crook is accused of using Mr Palmer's name and a fictitious job offer to lure a National Australia Bank employee to a luxury mansion in Indonesia owned by former AFL footballer turned entrepreneur Tony Smith.

Police today also raided the office of former Gold Coast policeman turned private Investigator Michael Featherstone.

Police say once the three accused, Crook, Featherstone and Smith got the bank employee to the mansion they attempted to coerce him to contradict evidence he'd given in a $70 million dollar court case between Smith and the NAB.

The bank officer was allegedly threatened with violence and forced to give a false video confession.

Police were quick to emphasise Clive Palmer knew nothing of the elaborate scheme.
