Emergency services are racing against time to free a rock climber who became wedged between two boulders in rural Victoria.

The 24-year-old man was at Mount Arapiles in western Victoria trying to get through a small crevice in what is known as a "squeeze test" when he fell and became stuck about 10pm last night, police say.

He managed to phone friends who then contacted emergency services.

Crews are working to free the man who could be suffering from "crush syndrome", which can be life-threatening.

The syndrome can lead to major shock and renal failure.

Heaters were brought in to keep him warm overnight and he has been medicated by paramedics.
