Climate change protesters cause chaos at WA Parliament

Chaos has descended on WA's State Parliament House with five people arrested and 10 handed move-on notices during a heated protest.

Activists from Extinction Rebellion threatened to break the law in their fight for action.

Up to 250 protesters descended on State Parliament to get their message across, inside and outside the building.

Fifteen activists interrupted the Lower House at midday demanding the WA Premier answer their questions about climate change action.

Protesters declared a climate emergency on the State Government and demanded zero emissions by 2025.

"We believe that this now is the only way to make people stand up and become aware to take action" one protester told 9News.

"We're not trying to be difficult, we just can no longer comply, " another protester added.

Police were ready for the disruptions, and 88 officers from the riot squad and mounted section surrounded Parliament House.

The police chopper and drone were in the sky patrolling.

As protesters were removed their supporters blocked traffic, sitting on the paths and road.

Extinction Rebellion said there's more protests to come in a week-long nationwide event planned in October.
