Climate change 'key in tax reform': Greens

Tackling climate change needs to be a central flank in Malcolm Turnbull's plan to shake up Australia's economic system, says Greens leader Richard Di Natale.

The prime minister called for new ideas on tax reform that would be seen as "fair" and "achieve public support" during a much-anticipated address to an economic and social reform conference on Thursday.

Senator Di Natale said the fairest component Mr Turnbull could focus on for Australia was to get serious about global warming.

"Malcolm Turnbull doesn't have a plan for managing the economy unless central to that vision is taking some very serious, evidence-based targets to Paris on climate change," he told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.

"You don't have a plan for managing the economy unless you've got a plan to tackle global warming."

Senator Di Natale also cautioned against any GST increases, saying they would hit low-income earners most.

"Malcolm Turnbull's got to demonstrate that he's a different coalition leader, that he's prepared to take on the big end of town rather than simply going down the easy option and expansion of the GST," he said.
