On 23 September 2014, Nine News reported that Pirovic Enterprises had been fined for labelling and promoting “cage eggs” as “free range”.

Nine News wishes to clarify that there is no suggestion the company ever sold or promoted cage eggs as free range eggs.

Pirovic Enterprises Pty Ltd was fined $300,000 by the Federal Court which declared, by consent, that the company engaged in misleading conduct and made misleading representations in its labelling and promotion of eggs as ‘free range’.

The Court found that the packaging represented to consumers that the eggs came from hens that were able to and did in fact move freely on an open range each day, when that was not the case.

The company says it upgraded its facilities and farming practices in 2013.
