The 27-year-old man who suffered a fatal heart attack during the City2Surf tried to "crawl over" the finish line after he collapsed.

Witnesses said the Coogee man, who suffered a cardiac arrest in the final metres of the race on Campbell Parade, Bondi Beach, was unable to reach the finish line before he turned white and passed out.

It is believed his partner was also racing in the annual charity fun run, although she wasn't by his side when he collapsed.

Paramedics worked tirelessly to save him, however, he was pronounced dead on arrival at St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner, but the death is not being treated as suspicious.
