First Uber, now Village: Cinema charged punters more during peak periods

Village Cinemas has confirmed it charged filmgoers more during peak movie times this summer.  

Up until this afternoon, the popular cinema chain was making punters fork out more for sessions after 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

At cinemas including Crown, Fountain Gate and Doncaster, adult tickets jumped from $22 to $23.

“We were running pricing variation trials.... we can now confirm that all pricing variation trials have been stopped effective immediately,” Village said in a statement this afternoon.

There is also speculation on social media that the price of small popcorn at Village Cinemas increased by more than six percent at surge times.

The company has said it is now investigating the claims.

Meanwhile, at Hoyts Cinemas prices varied as well; a screening of blockbuster The Greatest Showman at Eastland on Friday at lunchtime costs $15- just three hours later, prices spiked by $4.
