Virus rules eased for churches this Easter

Singers and other assistants will be allowed to take part in Easter church service webcasts and broadcasts.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said churches would be considered as "workplaces" for Easter services, and as such given some flexibility under coronavirus social distancing rules.

Mr Morrison said this would mean churches could have, for example, a cantor and other assistants involved as well as the priest or minister.

"Not people going to church ... churches are not open, places of worship are not open, I want to be very clear about that," he told reporters in Canberra on Friday.

The prime minister also warned that people should not be travelling for the school holidays or to visit family over the long Easter weekend.

"We put the Easter decorations up in the house yesterday with Jenny and the kids - it might actually keep them occupied for at least an hour or so if they're painting Easter eggs or whatever," he said.

"But this Easter will be at home. People should not be getting in their cars and going to other places."
