Church looks at Melbourne abuse scheme

The Melbourne archbishop will move to enhance the independence of the Catholic Church's process for handling abuse complaints in the archdiocese.

The child abuse royal commission found the much-criticised Melbourne Response is not independent, is overly legalistic and should leave it to the police to advise abuse victims about potential charges.

Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart says he will carefully examine how the scheme's independence can be enhanced and potential conflicts of interest avoided.

Archbishop Hart on Tuesday said the archdiocese would also review the Melbourne Response independent commissioners' appointment terms concerning victims' rights and reporting abuse to police.

He has backed the royal commission's stance that a national $4.3 billion redress scheme funded by the federal government is the best option to provide justice for child abuse survivors.
