'Tis the season...already? Christmas decorations takeover shelves

Retail stores across Adelaide have started to feel the Christmas spirit - three days out from the big day.

Major retailers including Myer, David Jones and Woolworths have begun stocking festive items, including baubles, decorations, trees as well as fruit mince pies and Christmas puddings.

"I think it is a little too early I like to engross myself in the season when it happens," one shopper told 9NEWS.

Marketing experts said it is a move designed to get impulse shoppers spending.

"Winter's a very slow period for retail so naturally they want to bring the big guns which is Christmas," Associate Professor Svetlana Bogomolova from the University of South Australia said.

However, others believe retailers won't be seeing any benefit from the sales.

"It's not effective, it's not customer driven and it will not enhance customer satisfaction or establish relationships," retail analyst Barry Urquhart said.

"Halloween, the spring festival with racing, the Melbourne Cup, those sales will be suppressed if you overemphasise the early arrival of Christmas."

In a statement, Woolworths said its Christmas lines always arrive in September.

The supermarket giant said last year it sold more than a million fruit mince pies in the first months they hit the shelves.

The official Christmas retail season will begin on the November 30.
