Christmas comes early in Aussie supermarkets

Shoppers are facing an especially long run-in to Christmas with the early arrival of Christmas fare on to shelves across Australia.

It might only be the first week of September but already decorations have gone on sale.

Fruit mince pies, crackers and baubles were among the festive paraphernalia unboxed and loaded into the aisles of Coles and Woolworths this weekend.

But many shoppers have since taken to social media to express their annoyance at the premature products.

“Christmas cakes and mince pies on August 31. Is that a record,” Twitter user Carmel Audley wrote.

“Christmas puddings in Mount Barker Coles in August. There should be a law against it,” another tweeted.

Fellow Twitter user Eliza Sum wrote: “Who's even eating mince pies in Sep, they're certainly no choc hot cross bun.”

Coles defended the early arrival of the festive season in their stores, posting:

“We like to be super organised for this busy time of the year.”
