Former MP may return to challenge Newman at next election

Former Queensland government MP Chris Davis has revealed that he is currently deciding whether or not to run as the Labor candidate in Premier Campbell Newman’s seat at the next election.

Dr Davis stepped down as Member for Stafford in May after he was sacked from the LNP Cabinet for speaking publically about his opposition to the government’s proposed doctor contracts.

He told the ABC that he had held informal discussions with the state Labor Party about running against Premier Newman in the electorate of Ashgrove.

“It’s not a matter of (running) against the Premier, it’s just that I have an affinity with the people of Ashgrove having been the adjacent electorate,” he said.

“All we’ve done is open the investigation of the potential, nothing else.”

Dr Davis went on to say that the LNP could have prevented the 18.6 per cent swing it suffered at the Stafford by-election last weekend if it had repealed controversial policy decisions earlier.
