Melbourne Chinatown stabbing murder accused to claim self defence

A Forest Hill man charged over a fatal stabbing in busy Chinatown has allegedly told police it was an act of self defence.

Fai Sing Yiu, 59, is accused of stabbing 64-year-old Alan Wong yesterday afternoon.

The pair were known to each other and met at the Post Deng Cafe where Mr Yiu works.

Police allege an argument erupted between the two before spilling out onto Little Bourke Street in front of shocked Chinatown patrons.

Both men made their way to the Golden Square car park where Mr Yiu allegedly stabbed Mr Wong repeatedly with a knife.

He later died in Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Police said, during an out of sessions court hearing, that Mr Yiu made full admissions about the stabbing but said it was an act of self defence.

Today he faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court where he was remanded in custody.

Mr Yiu wasn't required to enter a plea and didn't apply for bail.

The court was told this was Mr Yiu's first time in police custody and that he'd suffered a hand injury during the struggle.

The prosecution will rely on CCTV from Chinatown restaurants as well as DNA and evidence from the scene.

Mr Yiu returns to court in February.
