Why you will have to think twice about packing away your winter woolies

Summer isn't quite here yet, and a late spring chill is forecast to remind people of that in Australia's south-east in coming days.

Weatherzone said a cold air mass from the Southern Ocean was spreading across the region, with Melbourne at a "feels like" temperature of 5 degrees this morning, when the official temperature was a tick over 8 degrees.

Chill continues to grip the city, with an 11.4 degree temperature at about midday feeling like 7.6 degrees, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Showers have also developed over the city.

Hobart, meanwhile, felt like it was below freezing at midday, with a temperature of 7 degrees.

Weatherzone reported snow was forecast to reach down to about 400 metres above sea level in parts of the state today, while small hail and "wintry showers" are also expected.

The site's Ben Domensino reported that the cold air was set to spread north and east throughout the afternoon, reaching Sydney by this evening.

"Sydneysiders will notice an abrupt temperature change when southerly winds sweep up the coast on Tuesday evening, particularly in the city's eastern suburbs," he said.

"While Tuesday is forecast to reach 28 degrees in the city, it will feel more like 10 to 12 degrees in the evening after the change has passed through."

The chilly blast will come with "a brief period" of extreme fire danger in the NSW Greater Hunter and Upper Central West Plains districts today, as warm, dry winds blow ahead of the approaching cold air mass.
