The crash took place on the Gateway Motorway at Boondall, at 12.30pm (AEST).

Witnesses have told 9NEWS a 4WD lost control and was on the wrong side of the road when it slammed into the car with three children inside.

A woman passing by the accident told 9NEWS she promised to hold the hand of a girl trapped in the crash, even if the car caught fire.

An ambulance spokesman said five people were taken to hospital, including two adults and three children.

One female was listed as critical, one child as being in a serious condition, two males as stable and the two-year-old child with minor injuries.
