Children couldn't escape WA caravan fire

Attempts to rescue two children who died in a caravan fire near the northern regional West Australian town of Tom Price were impossible, the Coroner's Court has heard.

In October 2008, three-year-old Daniel Jarvis Cook-Hill was playing with two-year-old Kyla Chadd in a caravan parked in the backyard of a property at the Wakathuni Indigenous Community when it caught fire.

The WA Coroner's Court is investigating the death of the boy, who was under the care of the Department for Child Protection at the time.

He was living with his grandmother, five other children as well as Kyla and her parents.

On Tuesday, the court heard that when the girl's father realised the children were inside the burning caravan, the intensity of the fire was such that nobody could enter and rescue was impossible.

In his opening address, counsel assisting the coroner, Lyle Housiaux, told the court the caravan contained readily combustible material and it appeared the children may have had some matches that could have started the fire.

The inquest continues.
