Australian families face 29 percent price increase in child care under government plan

Australian parents are being warned to prepare for another surge in the cost of child care, with new government figures revealing a potential 29 percent increase could be on the cards.

For some struggling families, it could mean an extra $30 a day for childcare by 2016.

Parents paying $100 a day for childcare could see their fees jump to $129, while those forking out $80 a day would be forced to pay $100, under the proposal.

Shadow Early Childhood Education, Childcare and Youth spokeswoman Kate Ellis savaged the move.

“We have seen a further $2.4 billion blow out in the childcare budget, which they (the federal government) have put down to, and I quote, ‘unexpected price increases’,” she said.

The government has returned fire, claiming that under Labor child care costs increased by 56 percent.

The proposed price increases form part of a child care productivity commission report being considered by the Coalition.
