A child is being treated for meningococcal disease in Bendigo Hospital after being admitted at the weekend.

A Victorian Department of Health and Human Services spokesman told 9news.com.au the child was progressing well because the disease was detected early.

It is understood to be an isolated incident and no other cases have been reported.

“Diagnosis was made quickly and we know in instances of meningococcal, early diagnosis leads to early treatment which leads to better outcomes and it would appear in this case that is what has occurred,” the spokesman said.

Antibiotics have been provided to the child’s family and information has been provided to parents at the child care centre where the child attended.

The spokesman said all appropriate action had been taken and there was no known risk to other members of the community.
