A two-year-old boy has died in hospital, more than a week after he was pulled from a fish pond at a home in Sydney's west.

Emergency services were called to the house in Fairfield West about 10.30am on January 2 after Henry Tran was found unconscious in the pond.

He was taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition.

Sadly, Henry passed away in hospital last night.

At the time, neighbour Ramsey Vong told Fairfax he heard the boy's father pleading "help, help, help".

Mr Vong said he performed CPR on the child with the boy's uncle until paramedics arrived.

The incident follows a string of drownings across New South Wales over the holiday period.

Last week, a two-year-old girl died in hospital after being found unconscious in a backyard pool in Macquarie Fields.

Acting Superintendent Mark Brett said police were investigating the circumstances of the girl's death, including whether the pool fence had been left open.

He said the toddler had been missing for "a few minutes" before she was found.

"Our prayers and thoughts go out to the family of the young child," he told reporters.

"It's very tragic circumstances at a supposedly joyous time of the year."

Acting Supt Brett begged parents to supervise their youngsters, especially around pools.

"Don't assume you know where they are; be sure you know where they are," he said.

More than a dozen people have died from drowning in NSW over the holiday period.
