A Perth family has been forced to watch its home burn after their toddler son started a fire playing with a lighter.

Three-year-old Cruize accidentally started the blaze at the home on Elbuet Way in Parmelia yesterday morning – but he, his mother Sinead Shewring and sister Abby were able to escape the flames.

“I must have dozed off for about 10 minutes and my son came out with a lighter in his hand and he’s woken me up and I can see smoke coming through the house and my whole bedroom was on fire,” Ms Shewring said.

“I just got the kids and the dog and got out.”

The house was engulfed in just minutes, with firefighters unable to save anything inside.

A nearby Good Samaritan was treated for smoke inhalation after jumping a fence and running inside to make sure nobody was trapped.

Authorities have put the damage bill at about $300,000.

“We’ve put so much work into that house and now it’s just gone,” Ms Shewring said.
