Accused Brisbane child abductor was 'hearing voices'

A man accused of taking a one-year-old boy from his cot at his Brisbane home yesterday will stay behind bars after appearing at Richlands Magistrates Court.

Olando Emile Aleki, 31, is facing two charges including stealing a child and enter dwelling with intent. He applied for bail but was refused.

His lawyer Tahlia Boettcher tried to argue Aleki has mental health issues, but admitted he is undiagnosed and unmedicated.

"How do I manage that?" Magistrate Aaron Simpson told his lawyer.

"He told police he was a schizophrenic and is hearing voices. And he's [allegedly] entered someone's residence wearing a mask and gloves ... there's obviously on the police facts, some thinking behind that."

Police claim Mr Aleki was captured on CCTV walking into the Darra home and taking the sleeping toddler straight out of his cot, then walking out.

The boy's step-grandfather realised the infant was missing an hour later and called Triple Zero. An Amber Alert was issued and detectives located him at a Salisbury home, unharmed seven hours later.

Mr Aleki's lawyer argued he would seek help for his mental issues.

Despite the accused having no criminal history, and a full-time job, the magistrate refused his bail application, saying the risk to community was simply too great.

Ms Boettcher refused to answer questions outside court.

Police say Aleki is known to the family, but his court appearance has done little to clear up why he allegedly took the young boy. But the one-year-old is in good spirits.

"He's really happy. Running around. Chasing the chickens," his step-grandfather, who can't be named for legal reasons, told 9News outside court.

Mr Aleki will face court again in March.
