Charities regulator to remain in place

The federal government has abandoned plans to abolish the national charities regulator.

The plan to shut down the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission had been in the works since 2013 in a bid to cut red-tape but the coalition put the proposal to bed on Friday.

"The government's consulted with, and listened to, all interested stakeholders ... there is sufficient support for the retention of the ACNC," Social Services Minister Christian Porter said in a statement.
