Charges against a driver involved in a crash that killed a 10-year-old boy in Melbourne's outskirts in May have been upgraded to culpable driving.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are renewing their appeal for witnesses after the May 27 crash at Truganina.

A blue Toyota van and a tip truck were travelling south on Hopkins Rd when an Audi sedan allegedly overtook both vehicles, pulling up in front of the van, police said. The three vehicles collided.

A 10-year-old Hoppers Crossing boy was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital but died on Sunday. A six-year-old girl, a five-year-old boy and a four-year-old boy were injured.

The Audi driver, a 46-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, was originally charged with conduct endangering life and dangerous driving causing serious injury.

But police say his charges will now be upgraded to culpable driving and dangerous driving causing death.
