Passengers stranded as global check-in system used by international airports suffers outage

There are significant delays at airports across Australia due to system issues with software used to check-in passengers.

Sydney Airport and Melbourne Airport both took to Twitter this morning to advise passengers of the issues.

Check-in services had resumed as normal at both airports by around 11.30an, but there are still some delays due to the earlier issues.

Brisbane Airport has also been affected by the outage, but a spokeswoman for the airport told 9news.com.au each airline is checking people in manually.

“We certainly have been caught up in it,” she said.

“Every international departures passenger is being manually processed, so they’re moving a bit slower than usual, but are working through everyone.”

Melbourne Airport confirmed the check-in system is used globally. 

"Check-in for international flights has been affected by an outage of the Advanced Passenger Processing (APP) system," a spokesperson told 9news.com.au.

"This system is used globally, so the issue affects many other airports as well as Melbourne."

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection confirmed it is aware of the issue. 

"The Department is aware of an external system outage with the Society International Telecommunications Aeronautiques (SITA) system, this will affect travellers entering and departing Australia," it said in a statement. 

"Additional ABF officers will be deployed as required to minimise the impact to passengers."

New Zealand's Auckland Airport also reported issues with its check-in system earlier today, but says it is now fully functional. 

Passengers at Sydney Airport voiced their frustration on Twitter earlier today.

Some airlines are checking customers in manually, but many have been left stranded in the departures entrance way.

Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for updates on the situation.
