CCTV has been rolled out in schools across New South Wales

Extra eyes have been installed on playgrounds across Sydney, in the form of CCTV cameras.

More than 200 schools across New South Wales now have security cameras installed, including Gordon West Public, Carlingford West public, Castle Hill High, and Sydney Boys High.

The Education Department says the majority are in external areas and it doesn’t endorse the use of cameras to manage student behaviour.

But some parents think that even just surveillance is a step too far.

“It’s probably a bit of an invasion of privacy I think,” one parent told 9NEWS.

“Kids need to be protected, I don’t think they need to be on camera 24/7,” said another.

Opposition Leader Luke Foley is also unconvinced.

“I would certainly hope that a combination of parental leadership and teacher supervision would make this unnecessary,” he said.

“Do we really need a surveillance state in our children’s playgrounds?”

Legal experts warn the footage from the school’s security cameras could be used against them, if used by bullying victims to take action or sue for compensation.

Lawyer Sam Macedone said: “It is a fact in New South Wales, there are more litigious actions for bullying than most other states in Australia.”
