Cabinet minister Michaelia Cash says she would never blame her gender for her behaviour but also hopes no-one would ever criticise her because she is a woman.

The employment minister and minister for women refused to buy into commentary on Tony Abbott's chief of staff Peta Credlin, who has hit back at a book about her time in the prime minister's office.

"I certainly would never argue that if I'm doing the wrong thing or I'm receiving criticism, it's because of my gender," Senator Cash told the National Press Club on Tuesday.

When pushed on whether Ms Credlin was a "victim", Senator Cash cited International Women's Day.

"This is a day very much to celebrate the achievements of women, to look to the future," she said.
