A young Adelaide woman whose car was stolen in a frightening carjacking was able to track the thief using an app on her boyfriend's phone.

Vanessa Osovnikar was working with colleagues at a bar on Flinders St last night, while her partner waited outside in her car.

About 7pm, a stranger jumped into the driver's seat and started the engine, forcing Ms Osovnikar's partner to jump out of the moving car.

She and her colleagues gave chase, but the carjacker got away - at first.

Ms Osovnikar's partner's phone was still in the car, and using the Life 360 app, police were able to keep tracking the vehicle, pursuing it across Adelaide for more than an hour.

"I was extremely stressed, I was on the verge of tears and vomiting at work," Ms Osovnikar said.

Vanessa Osovnikar said she was glad her car was not badly damaged. 9News

The man finally abandoned the car in Payneham, where it was recovered.

A 27-year-old Croydon Park man has been arrested.

Ms Osovnikar said she was grateful the car, which she had received as a gift from her father just seven weeks ago, was not badly damaged.
