Caravan fire likely sparked by discarded cigarette leaves couple with nothing

A NSW couple has been left with nothing after a fire destroyed their caravan and ute at the Brighton Beachfront Holiday Park in Adelaide. 

The blaze, which occurred shortly after midnight and caused an estimated $120,000 in damage, is believed to have been sparked by a discarded cigarette.

The fire engulfed the caravan, forcing the couple to flee, with the flames quickly spreading to their ute.

Firefighters arrived at the holiday park within minutes as other visitors scrambled out of their accommodation, fearing that the van could explode.

"I don't think people knew what to do because there was gas and there was fuel still on the vehicle," witness Nicole Staniforth said. 

The couple, who had travelled from Batemans Bay, NSW, to visit family had been living in the caravan. 

"They looked like they were very much in shock just walking around watching it unfold, it's probably their livelihoods," Staniforth said.
