Car shot during Hunter region ATM attack

A car has been shot at after four men tried, and failed, to steal an ATM in NSW's Hunter region.
Police say a passerby stopped his car near the men's 4WD when they were trying to steal the ATM in the Lake Macquarie area on Friday morning.
The men then returned to their car and drove away, firing a shot which hit the bonnet of the man's car.

Police say the ATM was not taken.
