University student tasered by gang in foiled car-jacking

A university student has been attacked with a metal weapon and tasered by a gang trying to steal his car in Melbourne’s north overnight.

The 25-year-old driver and his passenger, who have requested not to be identified, were returning home through Bundoora when they noticed they were being followed by two cars about 1am.

He pulled over, triggering the trailing cars to stop. Moments later, masked offenders had surrounded the student’s Holden and ripped open the doors, ordering him and his passenger to get out.

The gang tried to pull the male driver out of his seat, but were stopped by the seatbelt. The offenders then unleashed a taser on the young man and began hitting him with a metal object.

“They started electrocuting my friend… they were telling us ‘get out of the car or otherwise we’re going to kill you,” the female passenger told 9NEWS.

It was only when a neighbour heard the woman’s screams and raced outside that the attackers stopped, driving away in their vehicles with the victim’s car keys.

Police described the ordeal as “horrendous”.

“They were just there to drop someone off, and next thing they’re being ripped out of a car,” Detective Senior Constable Craig Hall said.

As the driver recovers in hospital with stitches in the back of his head, his friend told their attackers, “ just leave people alone.”

Investigations are ongoing.
