The learner driver who sent a Mercedes careening into a café in Sydney’s south today says the accident occurred because the other car failed to give way.

The L-plater was in the middle of his second ever driving lesson when he crashed the training car into a Mercedes on Tuffy Avenue in San Souci, sending it careening towards tables full of diners.

Three people travelling in the cars were taken to hospital by ambulance, but nobody in the café was hurt.

Owner Dimitri Lascaris said several of his workers and two tables of customers were outside at the time of the crash.

All of the injured were taken to St George Hospital, suffering only minor injuries including chest pain and cuts to the head.

The learner driver was looked over at the scene and given the all clear.

The building is now also being assessed with workers picking through the smashed rubble and shattered bricks as the clean-up gets underway.
