Police in Canberra are investigating an alleged carjacking after a man drove off with a woman's car after she stopped to help at the scene of an accident.

Dashcam video of the incident shows the aftermath of what appears to have been a head-on collision in Belconnen, prompting motorists to pull over and offer assistance.

But an opportunistic thief at the scene had another idea, jumping behind the wheel of one of the helpers' cars.

She realises at the last moment what is happening and rushes over to try and stop the crook, but he takes off quickly, ripping a U-turn onto the median strip and burning off down the road.

The woman chases after her car as best she can, but to no avail.

Police have confirmed to ninemsn that the incident is being investigated, with more details to follow.
