The woman reported the alleged abuse to police on Thursday this week.

The next day, police then searched the man's home. He was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House.

Police said the 39-year-old had been paroled in April.

He was charged with aggravated assault, choking, suffocating and strangling another person, having sexual intercourse without consent and using a carriage service to menace and harass.

He was expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today.
