NSW Premier says going on a motorbike ride counts as exercise, assures riders they won't be fined

The NSW Premier has confirmed riding a motorbike counts as exercise in the state and riders will not be fined.

In an interview on 2GB this afternoon, Gladys Berejiklian was asked whether someone riding a motorbike from "Sydney to the Hawkesbury and back again" would be breaching the rules.

"Technically, and the police are aware of this, that riding a bike is akin to exercise," Ms Berejiklian told Ben Fordham.

"They've not booked anybody for riding a motorbike because that is akin to riding an exercise bike, if it's for purposes of exercise, even though it's a stretch.

"But what we've tried to do in NSW is be as flexible as we can and keep people as safe as possible," she said.

However, on April 9, a motorbike rider was fined $1,000 after being stopped by police on Oxford Street, in Gateshead.

NSW Police said at the time the 36-year-old allegedly provided multiple conflicting reasons for not being home, and said he was on his way to help a friend fix a bike.

Police in NSW have been given discretionary power to issue $1,000 fines for people breaching social distancing protocols and being out of the house without a valid reason. In this case, the officers deemed his reasons for travel as non-essential and issued the man with a $1000 PIN.
