Man charged with murder after shooting outside Melbourne shop

A 27-year-old Greenvale man been charged with murder following a shooting outside a shopping centre in Melbourne’s north on Monday.

George Marrogi allegedly fired multiple rounds at the legs and buttocks of his victim outside an Officeworks store on the corner of the Hume Highway and Mahoneys Road in Campbellfield.

A 24-year-old Southbank man allegedly lay in the gutter of the carpark with gunshot wounds while the alleged shooter fled the scene in a red Holden Commodore.

The victim later died in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Marrogi appeared in an out-of-sessions court last night charged with one count of murder.

Detective Senior Constable Julio Salerno alleged Marrogi got out of a car at Campbellfield Plaza at 3.40pm and fired multiple shots at the victim, who was sitting at a bus stop with two other men.

The man was hit in the legs and buttocks and tried to run away.

Marrogi allegedly followed the man into an Officeworks car park before fleeing in a car.

Police said the incident was captured on CCTV.

The 27-year-old Greenvale man barely said a word at the court appearance.

He was remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court later today.

Local chemist staff locked their doors to keep customers inside and away from the alleged violence.

“We just wanted to get everyone inside, just to safety… it was just crazy,” chemist worker Cathy Palumbo told 9NEWS.

Stunned witnesses said the shooting was surreal.

“It didn’t seem real…I didn’t believe it was happening,” witness Trisha Fragapane said.

“It’s a person, it’s another human being passing away for no reason whatsoever,” business owner Rhonda Semirli said.
