New call to make North Queensland a separate state
Liberal Party Senator Matt Canavan. (AAP)
North Queensland should become its own state - and it shouldn't be the only new addition, a Nationals Senator says.
Matt Canavan plans on putting a submission into the Federation White Paper review, pushing for boundaries to be re-drawn to better represent Queensland's north.
"Ultimately good fences make for good neighbours, and perhaps we need a few more fences in Australia," he told ABC radio today.
It's not the first time a politician has joined the push for the north to separate from Queensland.
Clive Palmer was behind renewed support for a separate northern state in 2013.
