Call for Sydney casino inquiry to be open

An inquiry into the suitability of Crown Resorts to hold casino licence for its Barangaroo development should be open to the public, the Greens say.

The call comes amid reports the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority does not intend to release public submissions received during its probity investigation into whether Crown should be associated with a NSW casino licence.

Fairfax Media reported on Saturday the authority would also not confirm if the inquiry would be held in public.

A 1994 inquiry into granting Sydney's first casino licence was held in public, the report states.

Greens NSW MP John Kaye said there could be little confidence in any outcome conducted behind closed doors.

"A secretive process will feed the perception that the casino approval has been biased by a sweetheart deal between Premier Barry O'Farrell and Crown Casino, with Labor cheering from the sidelines," he said in a statement.

James Packer's Crown Resorts got the go-ahead last year from the NSW government for its restricted casino at Barangaroo.

The gaming development will also house a six-star hotel.
