Calls for bail reform after alleged rapist released from custody

The NSW Police Minister is calling for bail laws to be reviewed after a man accused of raping a woman in Sydney at the weekend was released from custody.

Police allege Jason Williams, 35, dragged the 56-year-old woman to the ground and raped her, as the pair walked home from the Panania Diggers Club in Revesby in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Assaad Obeid, who lives on Marco Avenue where the alleged attack took place, said he and his brothers ran to the woman's aid.

"I heard a noise, came running out…had a look and the old lady was on the floor," Mr Obeid told 9News.

Mr Williams was charged with one count of sexual assault.

He faced fronted a Bankstown magistrate yesterday where he was granted bail on the condition he refrain from drugs and alcohol and did not make any attempts to contact the alleged victim.

9News tried to speak with the 35-year-old today, but he did not wish to comment.

When asked about the case, NSW Police Minister David Elliot said the states bail laws should be strengthened.

"We appeal to the courts to make sure they keep community safety front of mind whenever they are making a bail decision," he said.

Mr Williams will return to court in January.
