'Sickening and abhorrent:' Cairns woman to spend Easter behind bars, accused of stabbing and trying to hang a dog

A Cairns woman accused of stabbing and trying to hang a dog, in what police have described as a "sickening" attack, will spend Easter behind bars.

It is alleged 37-year-old woman Ivy Pahimbung was woken by a 58-year-old man she knew about 10am Wednesday at a Paramatta Park residence.

They pair engaged in an argument during which the woman proceeded to arm herself with a shifting spanner before threatening to assault the man, police say.

The man fled to another bedroom and locked the door before Ms Pahimbung allegedly damaged the door with the spanner and stabbed it with a knife.

She then allegedly tried to hang the dog, before stabbing it in the eye and chest with the knife.

Queensland Police Sergeant Cary Coolican said the alleged actions of the accused would not be tolerated.

"This sort of behaviour is just sickening, it's abhorrent. It's a defenceless animal and this woman has targeted this animal," Sgt. Coolican said.

The dog has received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Ms Pahimbung has been charged with several offences, including common assault, serious animal cruelty, burglary and committing wilful damage.

The matter will return to court on April 13.
