Australia will send more troops to Iraq to help train the Iraqi military.

The ABC and Sky News report that federal cabinet signed off on the increased deployment on Monday.

The plan - which could see up to 300 extra troops sent to the strife-torn nation - is expected to be put to the coalition party room on Tuesday before being announced publicly.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop declined to give details on Tuesday morning.

"I'm not going to pre-empt any announcement about that," she told reporters in Canberra.

"But I'm sure you'll be hearing more from the prime minister on that issue today."
