Bushfire threatens Albany's Mount Clarence

A bushfire is threatening lives and homes abutting Mount Clarence in Albany, Western Australia, where a historic war memorial is located.

A watch and act warning was issued on Wednesday evening for properties on Watkins Road, Thomas Street and Burt Street as firefighters battled the out-of-control blaze.

Residents have been advised to leave their homes if the path is clear or get ready to actively defend them.

WA's Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the bushfire was moving slowly in a northerly direction, and was out of control and unpredictable.

The cause of the fire, which was reported at 3.42pm (WST), is unknown.

The fire is being fought from the ground and air.
