A bushfire has destroyed a house in Victoria's southwest, but the fate of the occupants is not yet known.

Country Fire Authority spokeswoman said while the house was destroyed at Wensleydale, in the Otway Ranges, it's not yet known if anyone was inside.

"There is no access to the house by road because of fallen trees in the area, so crews are walking in," she said.

The fire broke out in bush at about 3pm and burned through several hectares of scrub on a private property.

Two firefighting aircraft, more than 100 firefighters and 28 fire trucks are there but the fire is not yet under control.

Residents in nearby areas, including Anglesea, Gherang, Sokel, Winchelsea South and Wurdiboluc are urged to monitor conditions and stay informed.
