Driver airlifted to hospital after school bus flips in collision with hay truck

A school bus driver has been airlifted to hospital after a vehicle carrying children and a large hay truck collided and flipped in regional Victoria

A Warracknabeal Special Developmental School bus carrying three children and a hay truck collided at the intersection of Warracknbeal-Stawell Road and Minyip-Dimboola Road about 8.30am, police said.

The force of the crash caused the hay truck to overturn and tipped a load of hay bales, while the bus flipped onto its roof.

Emergency services had to work to free the bus driver, a 65-year-old woman, from the wreckage of the bus.

"It did take some time,..there were some crush injuries, possible head injuries and some possible internal injuries," acting inspector Cameron Ross said.

She was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

All three children and a 61-year-old staff chaperone were extracted from the bus without serious injury.

Two of the children, aged 14 and 7, were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The truck driver, a 65-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries and blood testing.

He is assisting police with their enquiries.

The Department of Education said all families had been informed of the accident.

"Additional wellbeing support is available to students and staff at Warracknabeal SDS, Warracknabeal Secondary College and Warracknabeal Primary School," a spokesperson said.

"Our thoughts also go to the drivers of the bus and truck, both of whom were injured."

Investigators have said they were probing whether speed was a factor in the crash.

No charges have been laid.
